While the philosophy is simple, it is based on a biblical mandate to the
Jewish people. In parsha Mishpatim, God tells Moses and the people
of Israel that they may not derive personal benefit from loans made to members
of their community - in other words, they may not charge interest. Indeed,
this practice has proven to be an integral part of Jewish life for centuries,
reflecting a commitment to this ancient ethical teaching. It is the foundation
- the inspiration - for the Hebrew Free Loan Association.
HFLA lends money to Jewish individuals and organizations in need without
charging interest, but with the expectation that every loan will be repaid.
And they are. We are proud that over ninety-nine percent of our loans are
paid back, enabling us to loan the same dollars again and again.
